When it comes to repairing or replacing windows, it’s no contest to use the opportunity to select an energy efficient option.
While most windows may look the same, there’s actually technology that’s now used to make windows that are far more efficient in heating and cooling your home. There’s a few different components that make this possible.
Energy Efficient Window Glass
Energy efficient glass, also known as low-emissivity glass, is glass that’s been glazed over so that it better blocks the sun’s rays from penetrating through your windows. This type of glass is typically either double or triple glazed and it does an incredible job at keeping your home cool when it’s hot outside, and warm when it’s cold.
Insulating gas and spacers are a common window technology that is used to help make glass more energy efficient. Gas fills are inserted between glazing layers to reduce the amount of heat transfer between the interior and exterior of the window. Spacers are used to properly separate the glazed layers.
Energy Efficient Window Frames
Your window frame material is extremely important because it acts as a barrier which keeps the heat and cold from seeping into your home. Common materials for frames are wood, aluminum, vinyl, and wood-clad. At Integrity, we always work specifically with each of our customers to determine which material will best meet their needs and their budget.
Energy Efficient Windows vs. Regular Windows
There are a few very distinct differences between an energy efficient window and a regular window. The first being how much of the sun’s rays will be able to penetrate through the glass. As touched on above, newer window technologies like glazed glass can block as much as 90% of the sun’s rays.
Another difference is going to be the air leakage. Energy efficient window frames are more likely to keep cold or hot air from leaking in or out of your home. You may also find that you see more condensation on the outside of your energy efficient windows than regular ones. This is a good thing, it means your windows are better insulated and doing what they are supposed to.
Note: Condensation on the outside of your windows are one thing but if you notice condensation on the inside it can lead to bigger problems down the road including mold and mildew. Fortunately there are steps you can take to reduce condensation:
– turn on the fan or if your bathroom doesn’t have a fan open your window when showering
– turn on the stovetop exhaust fan and open windows when cooking
– open blinds and curtains to allow sun in
– invest in a dehumidifier in high moisture areas
