There are a number of things to consider when selecting a new roof system. Of course, cost and durability head the list, but aesthetics and architectural style are important, too. The right roof system for your home or building is one that balances these five considerations.

Here in Hampton Roads Asphalt Shingles are what we see installed most frequently. Asphalt Shingles have undergone significant changes in recent years with fiberglass reinforced products dominating the market.

• Organic shingles consist of a cellulose-fiber (i.e., wood) base that is saturated with asphalt and coated with colored mineral granules.
• Fiberglass shingles consist of a fiberglass mat, top-and-bottom layers of asphalt, and mineral granules.

A shingle’s reinforcement has little effect on its appearance. Organic and fiberglass products are available in laminated (architectural) grades that offer a textured appearance. Zinc or copper-coated ceramic granules also can be applied to organic or fiberglass products to protect against algae attack, a common problem in warm, humid areas like Virginia. Both types of shingles also are available in a variety of colors.

Other roofing materials include tile, slate, and synthetic products. Depending on the architectural style of your home one of these materials might be more appropriate.

Damage to your roof is difficult to see from the ground. A leading cause of a shortened roof life is improper ventilation of the attic space. During the summer months heat buildup in this area can easily reach 120°. Over time these seasonal heat and cold cycles will weaken a roof system.

It is important never to block off sources of roof ventilation, such as louvers, ridge vents or soffit vents, even in winter. Proper attic ventilation will help prevent structural damage caused by moisture, increase roofing material life, reduce energy consumption and enhance the comfort level of the rooms below the attic.

In many cases, a simple and cost-effective solution is to install proper fans in the attic. As a part of any roof inspection we analyze the ventilation and insulation in the crawl space, and if fans are needed we will we include this in our proposal.
